Overview

Whiplash, also called cervical acceleration / deceleration (or CAD) syndrome, is a painful neck injury commonly caused by car accidents, falls, and contact sports. It results from a quick, jerking motion that forces the neck beyond its normal range of motion.

How It Occurs

When the head is rapidly and violently whipped back and forth, the cervical spine can be hyperextended and hyperflexed, or forced past its normal range of motion. This can injure the vertebrae, supporting ligaments, joints and muscles in the neck, upper back and jaw.

Symptoms

Symptoms may occur immediately after an injury or several days or months later. Whiplash sufferers may experience neck pain and stiffness, difficulty turning the head, headache, dizziness, and confusion. They may also
experience memory problems, difficulty chewing or swallowing, burning or prickling sensations, and shoulder and back pain.

Care and Management

Chiropractic care of whiplash typically includes loosening and relaxing the muscles and an adjustment of the neck, shoulders and upper back. Additional care may include massage therapy, trigger point therapy or myofascial therapy, laser, ultrasound and ice or heat.

Safe, Noninvasive Care

Chiropractic care has proven to be a safe and effective method of care for patients who have whiplash and associated conditions. A continuing care plan may be recommended to ensure long-lasting benefits
