Overview

Lower back pain is a common, serious ailment that can be short-lived or long lasting. Problems in the lumbar spine can seriously impact a person’s daily life and can worsen over time, causing excessive wear and tear that could lead to advancing arthritis and degeneration.

Causes

Lower back pain may be caused by a misalignment of the vertebrae called a subluxation. Contributing factors can include injuries, diseases, congenital problems, slipped discs, collapsed vertebrae, muscle strains and ligament sprains, and arthritis. Small injuries that go unattended can worsen over time and result in major problems in the lumbar spine.

Symptoms

The most common symptom is discomfort in the back or lower limbs. Back pain may be localized in the lumbar spine, or may radiate down to the lower limbs. Other symptoms may include reduced range of motion, lack of concentration, indigestion, reproductive issues, and disruption of sleep.

Care and Management

Chiropractic care can be a safe and effective method for managing problems in the lumbar spine. Spinal adjustments, traction, decompression therapy, therapeutic stretches and strengthening exercises may be beneficial. Other care options may include rest, ice, massage therapy, splints or braces. A continuing care plan may be recommended to ensure long-lasting benefits.
