Knee Arthritis

Understanding Knee Arthritis – Woodstock, Georgia.

Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more body joints. The primary symptoms of arthritis are pain, stiffness, and swelling. The disease may affect any joint in the body, but it’s particularly common in the knee. This can render sufferers unable to do several everyday activities, such as climbing stairs or walking. It’s a serious disability for many people and a major cause of lost time.

Knee arthritis is mainly an adult disease although some forms affect children. Knee osteoarthritis is often a progressive and irreversible degenerative process. However, pain control and functional improvement are reasonable treatment goals.

Early treatment intervention is very important. It may improve the odds of preserving joint function and integrity for years – or even a lifetime. Thus, staving off debilitating pain and the possible need for joint replacement surgery.

Description Of Knee Arthritis

The three major types are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and posttraumatic arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

This is the most common type. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative, “wear-and-tear” type of arthritis. It occurs most often in people 50 years of age and older. However, it may occur in young people as well.

In knee osteoarthritis, the cartilage in the knee joint wears away slowly. The cartilage becomes rough and frayed as it wears away. The protective space between the bones reduces. Eventually, it results in bone rubbing on bone, thus producing painful bone spurs. Osteoarthritis develops gradually. Over time, the pain it causes will worsen.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease. It attacks several body joints including the knee joint. It’s symmetrical. The disease usually affects the same joint on both sides of your body. Rheumatoid arthritis causes knee pain and stiffness since the synovial membrane covering the knee joint starts to swell.

In Rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system attacks its own tissues. It damages normal tissue (such as ligaments and cartilage) and softens the bone.

Post-traumatic Arthritis

This form of knee arthritis develops after an injury to your knee. For instance, a broken bone may damage the joint surface and lead to knee arthritis years after the injury.

Ligament injuries and meniscal tears can cause instability and more wear on your knee joint. Over time, it can result in knee arthritis, Woodstock, Georgia.
